Dog intestinal obstruction caused by a variety of foreign bodies
Dog intestinal obstruction or blockage of the small or large
intestine is caused most commonly by a foreign body that
the dog has swallowed. Dogs seem to like to chew on and even
consume odd things at times. A wide variety of foreign
bodies can be ingested by dogs: bones, corncobs, rocks,
tampons, fabrics, food wrappings, chew toys, children's
toys, bottle caps, plant material, hair, fishhooks and
sewing needles, etc..
The smaller diameter foreign bodies usually pass through
uneventfully; larger ones will usually lodge in the small
intestine and cause obstruction. Some sharp foreign bodies
will pass through while others may penetrate the intestinal
wall and lead to infection.
Vomiting and a poor appetite are generally the initial signs.
Some dogs will have diarrhea and it can lead to constipation.
The dog will usually have a tense abdomen with few or
no bowel movements.
Obstruction of the intestines in dogs is always considered
an emergency situation. This is often identified on
physical examination of the abdomen. The diagnosis is made
by X rays of the gastrointestinal tract.
Don’t allow your dog to have small toys unless you are
absolutely certain he will not eat them. Give him larger,
safer toys like
Kong Toys
, nylabones,
galileo bones.
It's a good idea, however, to supervise your pet during play.
Not only will this minimize the chance of accidents happening,
but you'll also be providing your pet with quality time
spent with their favorite toy - YOU!
Prevention is the best treatment with
dog intestinal obstruction.
Exercise caution -- it could save your dog's life!
