Home remedy for ear mites that works

Dog ear mites, tiny external parasite that live on the surface of the skin lining in the ear canal. They pierce the skin surface to feed, causing inflammation and discomfort. If left untreated, bacterial infections and loss of hearing may result.

The mite lives its entire life on or near the pet, and it takes about 3 weeks for a mite egg to develop into an adult mite.

The adult mites are very mobile and can live for some time off of a dog, which enables it to be fairly contagious.

Some symptoms are excessive and persistent scratching around the ears, head shaking, and restless behavior.

Whether using a prescription medication or a home remedy for ear mites, the ear's must first be clean.

Begin treatment by cleaning out your dog’s ears before applying oil or medication. The exudates must be removed or the medication will merely sit on the waxy substance where it is of no benefit.

Veterinarians often recommend using white vinegar (also called acetic acid), because it removes dirt and debris and helps restore a healthy chemical balance in the ears.

Using a small amount of diluted vinegar (using either a 1:1 ratio or 1 part vinegar to 2 parts of water 1:2 ratio) pour into the ear canal, massage the area, then gently wipe the inside of the ear with a cotton ball.

Only clean the area of the ears that you can see.

Using a bulb ear syringe or a turkey baster will help you apply the solution.

NOTE: It is not a good idea to use vinegar when the ears are sore or ulcerated, as it will sting.

This home remedy for ear mites calls for three to six drops of almond oil or olive oil in each ear canal. This will smother the mites and may allow the infection to heal. You will need to continue the oil treatments for three to four weeks, by putting three to six drops of oil into the ear canals each day.

Be patient and thorough. Treatments can take up to four weeks because you have to eliminate any eggs that might hatch.

You may try over-the-counter products containing pyrethrins, although some say dog ear mites have become resistant to pyrethins, thiabendazole, and sevin...the chemicals in most dog ear mite treatments.

Made from chrysanthemums, pyrethrins are natural insecticides that are very safe to use. Just follow the instructions on the label.

Always try to keep your dog's ears dry. Increasing air circulation inside the ears will help control the growth of bacteria, yeast and fungi. Trim hair inside the ears periodically to allow more air to get inside.

If your dog’s skin is also affected, you will have to apply a topical medication to the skin.

In multiple pet households it is important to treat all the pets. Also wash pet beds or blankets, and clean your pet's environment.

This home remedy for ear mites will usually work within 3 to 4 weeks. As with any home treatment, if not, you will want to see your veterinarian to find out what is causing your pet's problem.

Typically, letting your family veterinarian professionally examine and clean your pet’s ears is easier and safer.
