Your puppy house training made easy
Your puppy house training is probably the one most critical
part of puppy training.
Be consistent in your training. Always use one method and
stick to it. Make sure everyone in your house knows this
method. You can not teach the dog what is acceptable if you
are uncertain. Consistency will be rewarded.
Try to maintain a strict schedule regarding what and when
you feed your dog.
Stick to a quality, dry food. It makes his digestion and
stool's consistent. A good quality, dry food also exercises
his jaws and helps to keep his teeth clean.
Changes in your puppy's diet can really mess up your dog's
stools (as well as give him health problems) and therefore
wreak havoc on your puppy house training plans.
Your puppy will require 3 or 4 feedings and waterings a day,
up to 6 months old. Make training easier by never allowing
your puppy continuous access to food or water while house
training. Do not allow your dog to free feed until house
training is well established.
Your puppy won't have very
good control of his stools and urine until after 3 months of
age, so he will need more frequent walks.
The best way to house train your puppy is to provide
frequent opportunity to eliminate in the proper place and
then reward and praise this behavior immediately as it
occurs.
To do this, walk your puppy on a leash within several
minutes after each meal, after each nap, and after playing.
Also take your puppy out 1st thing in the morning. If your
puppy is very young, carry him outside to the safe area.
Stay nearby and play with or pet him.
Remember consistency is the key to puppy house training.
When the puppy prepares to eliminate, begin using a phrase
which he will associate with elimination. Praise and reward
with treat immediately once the task is completed. Immediate
praise is necessary for your puppy to associate this with
elimination outside.
Within two to three days, most puppys will be able to
"control themselves" for eight hours during the night.
When you can't be with your puppy, provide a small area of
confinement or crate. Do not leave food and water with him,
or feed him before you leave. You should schedule your
pup's meal to be at least 1 hour before you plan to leave.
That way he(or she) can eat, digest their food and relieve
themself prior to your departure.
Your pup should not be left alone for long periods of time
and still expected to control himself.
If the pup starts to make a mistake, firmly but quietly say
"No" and take the dog straight to his toilet area. Do not
yell at your puppy, at this point it is up to you to be
observant of your dog. Any mistakes that are made are due to
you not paying attention.
Thoroughly clean the areas where he(or she) makes a mistake
with ammonia-free cleaner and use neutralizer. A simple
solution of vinegar diluted with water is a good
neutralizer. You can put some in a spray bottle for
convenience.
He will continue to use the potty where he
smells even faint traces of his own waste. And a dog's urine
contains ammonia.
