The return on your investment of puppy training is priceless!

You will spend a few months puppy training in return for years of joy with your obedient friend. It's very important that you teach your puppy early on what is considered acceptable behavior in your home. This training should start from day one, along with thinking of HIS or HER name. You should think ahead now what your home policy will be so you can start enforcing it now. Anything you allow your puppy to do now, should be acceptable later, so try to plan ahead.

During puppy training you need to remember, puppies don’t have the endurance of an adolescent or adult dog. Puppies can be very active for short amounts of time and then they need to rest and sleep. Keeping the obedience training sessions short, and integrate the puppy training into your daily routine. Always giving praise and rewarding your dog for all good behavior!

This is extremely important, as there will be times when they will do a lot wrong. It's easy to forget to praise good behavior because it goes unnoticed, but it's the most important part of maintaining good behavior.

Whenever puppy does something wrong immediately show him what you want him to do, then reward him for getting it right. If done correctly, your voice is sufficient for reprimand.

A correct reprimand is short, sharp and immediate, and never reprimand him unless you catch him in the act.

Training your puppy where you expect him or her to go to the bathroom is probably the one most critical part of puppy training. The best way to house train your puppy is to provide frequent opportunity to eliminate in the proper place and then reward and praise this behavior immediately as it occurs.

To do this, walk your puppy on a leash within several minutes after each meal, after each nap, and after playing. If your puppy is very young, carry him outside to the safe area. Stay nearby and play with or pet him.

When the puppy prepares to eliminate, begin using a phrase which he will associate with elimination. Praise and reward with treat immediately once the task is completed. Immediate praise is necessary for your puppy to associate this with elimination outside. Make training easier by never allowing your puppy continuous access to food or water while house training.

Make sure your puppy is hungry before you start a training session, such as "come", "sit", etc. This will help your puppy be more motivated. If at anytime the puppy loses interest, stop the training immediately and don't allow any food until the next regularly scheduled mealtime and practice session.
